Open EPUB File

Information, tips and instructions

EPUB Files and ZIP

EPUB is a format that was created in 2007 specifically for reading and compiling books. It is an acronym for Electronic Publication, or Electronic Publication.

EPUB files are zipped

An EPUB file contains other files within it. All files are compiled into a single file for ease of use and transport. The files it contains are:

  • XHTML files: with which you can create an ePub file from scratch. The amount will depend on the dimensions of the book and the number of chapters.
  • Images: including the cover of the book and all the illustrations that the book contains.

The way it works is such that when your preferred reader opens a file with an EPUB extension, what it does is display each XHTML file separately. When you move on to the next chapter, find and open the next XHTML file and corresponding images and display them. To open a file with an EPUB extension will depend on what you want to do with it and the software you want to use, either to read or to edit it.

Extract an EPUB file

You can use WinRar or another file compressor to unzip an EPUB and separate it into its individual files, as it is a zip file. The method to do this can be by right clicking on the file and then "Open with ..." and so you can review and edit each part of the EPUB. If you do any editing, you must recompile the book, for this you can use the Caliber software.

You should consider that EPUB files can use a system called DRM (Digital Rights Manager, for its acronym in English) to make sure that the person using it has paid for the book and that can mean some difficulties when unzipping a file that uses this technology.
